Enlisting on May 6, 1941, William T. Lemon served three years as a Technical Sergeant for the U.S. Army, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division. As a part of this division, Lemon was a part of one of the first waves of men to be led onto Omaha beach in Normandy, France. Initially, however, the infantry was trained in Scotland and England for the cross channel invasion witch took place from October 1942 to June 1944. As one of the first units to combat the beaches of Normandy, they were put under intense enemy fire and had to get through dangerous fortifications, but by the ninth they had secured the bluff tops and occupied Isigny. After the initial occupying of Isigny, the 29th captured St. Lo on July 18, 1944 and went on to Germany to fight many more battles.
